How I Handle Growing Old

I’ve been around a lot of years. I guess I’ve seen my better day! I’m retired with few commitments, a “seniors home” is where I stay! My, true love, passed-on, six years ago. A big change in my life! I’ll be living here, until such time, that I rejoin my wife! When I wake-up in the morning, before I leave my bed, I think about, what I’m gonna do, in the day that lies ahead! I say a little prayer, to get me on my way! I exercise, to loosen up. That’s how I start my day! I grab a cup of coffee, as I watch the morning news. I decide what clothes I’m gonna wear, shirt and pants and shoes! I make my bed and straighten up. Run my vacuum cross the floor. Make my place look sorta neat. But, I’m not really sure, what for? I guess it’s something in me! It’s what I have to do! My wife, was a kinda neat-nick, and I suppose that I am too! I jump into the shower, so I can start my day off clean! Take my meds and make some breakfast, that’s my usual routine! I have a second cup of coffee. I head out to meet the day. I’ll face whatever challenge, the good Lord sends my way! I’ll try to make life, a little brighter, each and every day! I’ll bring a smile to someone’s face, by what I do or say! I’m gonna live one day at a time, for as long as I may last! Watch my diet, walk a lot, and forget about the past! With hope and faith and confidence, and a trust in God that’s strong, I can deal successfully, with whatever comes along! God is the one I lean on, in times of stress and strife. I trust that He, is always there, down this road, we know as life! So, that’s where I am at present! How much longer I can’t tell! But, whatever time, I have left, I plan to use it well! Ralph Taylor 01/12/19

Ralph, I was with you there every step of the way, line for line, word for word. I know exactly where you're coming from, having spent 11 days in a nursing home just shy of three years ago. Actually had to threaten to escape to get out of there...Anyway, are you in the Chicago area by chance? If so, I'll be visiting you, my friend. Best wishes, Gershon

I feel like we just had a visit. I thoroughly enjoyed your poem, Ralph. You certainly succeeded at bringing a smile to my face. One of the lines I loved was "I decide what clothes I’m gonna wear" - it made me chuckle because I choose my husband's clothes. LOL
