How High the Walls We Build

HOW HIGH THE WALLS WE BUILD How high the walls we build; Against marauding tribes and infidels, Canon volleys and siege machines Both literal and imagined we defend. Symbols of strength and power; Secure the bricks and mortar… Look how high they tower! This is Civilization! Our best are used for prisons. Mighty are the walls we make That sonic forces cannot shake And towers for vision, foresight. How high the walls we build To conquer and to divide. How thick, how strong, How high, how long… But can a wall, however high, Be tall enough, strong enough, Secure enough to restrain A single butterfly?

Beware those who build walls to imprison the "butterflies of thought". Love the last line Phil.

Congrats Phil! The last two lines ring the note of the strongest wall, but not stong enough for a butterfly! Balveen

thank you Balveen, it took me 5 days to come up with that image with the help of a visit to my fave store (the Love Tree) and a butterfly in the window.

What a lovely ending, Phil. Instead of building higher and stronger walls to keep the enemy out, we should be working at eliminating the reasons why there are walls between us. One day the world will exist in peace without walls of any kind. I really enjoy your writings.
