How High the Walls We Build
HOW HIGH THE WALLS WE BUILD
How high the walls we build;
Against marauding tribes and infidels,
Canon volleys and siege machines
Both literal and imagined we defend.
Symbols of strength and power;
Secure the bricks and mortar…
Look how high they tower!
This is Civilization!
Our best are used for prisons.
Mighty are the walls we make
That sonic forces cannot shake
And towers for vision, foresight.
How high the walls we build
To conquer and to divide.
How thick, how strong,
How high, how long…
But can a wall, however high,
Be tall enough, strong enough,
Secure enough to restrain
A single butterfly?
