How Grateful I Am
I came to you on enfeebled feet
Heavy of heart, downcast my eyes.
And, in a flash, you held me to your heart.
And rose high to soar like a king in the air,
The bravado of those who defy misfortune
And change adversaries, their cares gone
We were on the clouds, they wafted us on.
With you by my side, a new lease of life
The memory came, in my boyish hands
Iheld a writhing dove, dressed its wound
And released it to the sky safe and sound.
Those were years we were so sure of life
Unready for shocks, unmindful of pain
We braved the world, its stress and strife
No friend in sight and our struggles in vain.
And you came in like hope on silver wings,
I felt your presence, the comfort it gave,
In your sad but defiant eyes the strength
And solace and undying hope I sought
I was so fragile, I could bear no loss.
And within moments of our joining hands,
I was back in stride, held high my head,
Euphoric in thought, felt so young at heart.
Now that we are one, we shall build on love
And hope that conquers a million hearts.
Before the candle of life is gone, we’ll achieve
Our mission to relieve the anguish of Man.
