Hope

There, far off in the distance Is a light on a hill A single light so still So far in this darkest night But if I am right That light is perhaps a house Perhaps the porch-light Of a farmer and spouse And if I am right We may be received With open arms With tea and biscuits And local charms Friendly arms and friendly face In this dark and dreary place If we walk there by light of star What seems distant is not that far What seems a mile May take a while As we carefully step in dimmest light To a friendly farm, if I am right
