Homelessness - You Have the Power To Help Us If You Like

You all walk past me and you don't bat an eye, Not even when you can see the pain in my cry, You tar me with the same brush as them all, that you cant deny, But ignoring me, you cant justify. No one gives me the time of day, You all literally leave me on the streets to decay, Letting me sleep in shop doorways, Whilst you have a spare sofa, which you wont give up to a ‘runaway’. I beg so I can buy food because I’m starving, But to you that is not alarming, Just a usual walk down the street to you, isn't it darling! You have the power to help us if you like. You think you are a good citizen because you give money to charity, Chuck a penny or two in the supermarket box with regularity, Not believing that you are purposely, Ignoring me, outside, who needs help urgently. You just assume giving money straight to us goes towards narcotics, Because of course everyone on the streets uses, we're all alcoholics, Whilst you're there sipping your gin and tonics, Isn't it ironic. Some people buy us food for fame, Put a video on Facebook, which is great because then others do the same, You all start trying because you want the likes, so to you its a game, But can you remember that I do have a name. I am a person just like you, I’ve had a hard life, lots of things I've had to push through, But does that make me not equal to you? I watch you buying things you don't even need, I see it everyday, peoples greed, Ignoring me whilst I plead, I just sit back silently and watch you overfeed. Please remember there are so many different reasons for us to be on the streets, Traumatic events like a house fire or having a job release, Or personal crisis, like domestic violence, so we’ve finally got some peace. But now we have nothing, apart from our items at our feet. You have the power to help us if you like. In England were taught what we work for should be ours, But I’ve seen kindness from different nationalities shown in our bars, Sharing their meals with open arms, Because thats how they've been brought up, whats mine is yours. I’m not saying some people don't help us a lot, But it should be everyones normal train of thought, Something which we are taught, From the time that we can walk. The number of homelessness has risen for 3 years in a row, But how many times have you heard that on the news, or a talk show? Better off ignored and kept in the shadows, Kept in the dark about what goes on outside of your own homes. You have the power to help us if you like.

Great poem Georgie. We all should help if not with money or food, give of our time. That could be us one day. Give the gift of love towards your fellow man.
