Homeless

I wrote this poem for a writing assignment when I was in 12th grade- 1997. I've saved it after all these years... The girl stood on the street, Her dress all raggedy, And her hair tangled like a bird's nest. She stood on the street, yet people passed her by. Winter came- with snow and wind. Her only warmth came from a cardboard box. She shivered constantly and tried to look happy, Yet the people passed her by. Rains came- with thunder and lightning, Her only protection under a porch, Soaked from head to toe. Yet the people passed her by. The sun shone brightly- and was very hot. It shone down on her, and burned her, Made her dehydrated, and she became sick. Yet the people passed her by. Then, after nine agonizing years, The man came. The man of her dreams, the one she'd been waiting for. The man in white.
