Once upon a time
Lived a child's rhyme
The magic we believe
Every Christmas Eve
Tucked into my bed
Prayers all said
Comfy, cozy, warm
Gentle kiss from Mom
Door open just a bit
Window candles lit
Couples now arrive
House becomes alive
Voices all drift near
Name them as I hear
Doorbell keeps ringing
Wishes they're bringing
All shed their jackets
Such a happy racket
My parents' best folks
Sharing stories, jokes
Finger foods and eats
Eggnog, fondue, treats
Food utensils clink
Ice cubes in drinks
Laughter by the barrel
Stereo playing carols
Footsteps in the hall
A joyous time for all
Listen for Dad's laugh
(And his better half)
Such comfort to hear
They're happy and near
Colors, shadows, more
Dance under my door
House of Christmas joy
A drowsy, happy boy
Mind drifts off to sleep
In a memory I'll keep
To warm me in the cold
And write a poem of ...
When I'm old.
