Hold It In

I didn't realize it then, when I was potty training my sons back when, they were toddlers and still in diapers, that they were also in training for the day, when I'd become middle aged and slightly gray, and suddenly became incontinent…. I remember driving them in the car, and we didn't get very far, when they would suddenly have to go pee, I'd say "hold it in!" and with nowhere else to go, we'd pull over by the side of the road, where they'd go behind a tree... now times are just the opposite, especially when we drive far in the car, and I start doing the piddly jig... whosever is driving has to drive like I'm dying, and hopefully get us all there safely in one piece, "Hold it in!" is all I hear, as they weave out and in, and they finally find a restroom very near, then I get out, and running like the wind, barely making it in, rush in and do my thing... and for the rest of the trip, I know I have to limit my liquid intake, mostly because if I don't then our lives are at stake, but my grown sons don't like to drive far in the car with me anymore, and show me no malice, they're just tired of having to drive haphazardly, just like the Dukes of Hazzard!

Cheryl, This delightful poem is about role reversal and the wages of age. It manages to be hilarious and yet sobering at the same time. I enjoyed every line. First-rate, Cheryl. Thanks for sharing, hugs xxx
