High Climber
HIGH CLIMBER
Above my sturdy maple –
By nature tree related –
A frisky, leaping fellow
Is lord of closed earth below
Wonder of agility
This sprite for all seasons
Knows not the gifts he’s bestowed
To what evolution owed
But goes daily surveying
Each frozen plot, fence, house top –
Careful descent, twist, turn -
Survival his main concern
He’s one of God’s high climbers
Instinct old as life itself
Mother Earth, then mortal man
Ascent the Creator’s plan
