Hiding Behind Humor
I use humor to distract you
From things I'd prefer you not to see-
Insecurity
Self hatred
Desperation
Disgust.
I hope I make you laugh so hard you cry,
So that you'll forget the question you asked about how I'm really doing.
Maybe if I keep you laughing,
You won’t notice the purple rings under my eyes that reveal I'm not sleeping at night,
And that I can't get out of bed most mornings.
Maybe you won't notice that every time I see my reflection,
I want to scream until my vocal chords tear apart,
Because I hate the person that is staring back at me.
Maybe if I keep you laughing
I can keep hiding behind the flimsy facade that I'm okay.
But I wish I could tell you I'm not.
