Hello Mister President - From a Neighborhood Child

“HELLO, MR. PRESIDENT!” We had all been issued small American flags on sticks. Jack was on probation, as was I, but we were, reluctantly by Mrs. Mengin, finally Let into the mix. “Now boys and girls when the big black car with American flags comes by We will all stand at attention salute with the right hand wave our flags with the right And say ‘Hello Mr. President.’” “HELLO, MR. PRESIDENT!” “Good! Let’s rise and form a single line No talking! Jack! I’m not going to put up with it! Stay out of the street folks!” (what’s this? Hadn’t noticed Hadn’t been listening all morning – the excited whispering all around) Sudden shuffle Giggles………………………………………………… Downstairs Outdoors………………………………………………. “The President is coming!” “Down 14th Street!” “Boys and girls! Stay back from the curb Against the fence! Don’t forget what we all say Remember to stand straight” “Do you think he well really come by this dumpy old school?” “HELLO, MR. PRESIDENT!” “Shut up, Earl…………..and it aint no joke!” ………………………………………………………………………………….? “Is he coming Mrs. Mengin? He should oughta be here by now” “I…………..I can’t see him……..yet………? I wonder?............. Oh dear!” A half-hour passed The futility of waiting began to be realized “HELLO, MR. PRESIDENT!” Jack laughs “That aint him Jack that’s an old lady….HAW HAW!” “HAW HAW………………………HAW HAW!” “HELLO, MR. PRESIDENT!.....HAW HAW! Punishing Jack was put off because of the moment’s frustration “Alright! Boys and girls let’s go back inside Hurry! Back to work!” Mr. Roosevelt had gone down 17th Street instead

I see that Gwen asked you here to list personal info on this poem. YOu ought to do it. I had read it before but still don't know who the people are. WAs Jack a friend of yours? Or was this totally fiction? Thanks for your recent remarks on my poems. I laughed out loud what you said about the lady looking like a crocodile in the store. hahaha.

hi, there, Daver, thanks for reading my LONG story on the Capote character Lily Jane. She was too straight laced to ever be someone I might want to be, but I sure admired her fortitude in that moviie I watched.

Pure entertainment Dave, We here in Canada never had one like him. Enjoyed this one. AND that La Gitana is fabulousd, much more passison and character than the one I wrote. It seems mild comparedf to yours. How I love the word swarthy and other descriptive words you use in this. It Steams! Thanks for sending.

Mr. Roosevelt was one of my favorite presidents to study in history class. So many contributions during some of the darkest days of this country. I can just image this scene, Daver. How fun and entertaining. For just a mere moment I was standing beside them giggling about calling the old lady Mr. President. What a hoot!! Hope u are well. Great to read your stuff again. GWendolen

gosh, with all the talk of Jack, I was fearing it would end with the kids missing the president becuase of JFK's assassination! But you tricked me.It was much farther back in time. I need to remember your age is older than mine. hahaha. Good poem, my good friend!
