He Fought For Freedom
A scared Vietnam veteran
fights to keep his demons at bay.
And aimlessly wandering, he
searches for a safe place to stay.
He is made to feel unwelcome,
a drugged-up soldier with no name.
And ridiculed; he's left to beg
from the shadows in utter shame.
A lady hands him a dollar,
smiles, and drives away in her car.
And it's not that he's ungrateful,
but; a dollar won't get him far.
He's a reminder of a war
that most of us want to forget.
And although he fought for freedom,
he faces moments of regret.
Try and picture yourself homeless,
with a hurt that won't go away.
And know that's the reality
he lives with every single day.
