Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

The radio was playing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Widow Kaye was putting reindeer figures on her shelf. She glanced outside where snow like frosting lay along her fence. “Yes, let my heart be light,” she muttered as the melody played on. She frowned. Although her tree looked nice and bright, it had no shining star. Where had it gone? It vanished like those “faithful friends so dear.” She sighed, “What am I doing all this for? The kids aren’t even coming.” Then a tear slid down her cheek. “Yes, ‘golden days of yore’ since not one soul this year can visit me!” she voiced. “Oh well, I sure do love this tree.” Written December 2015 For the Christmas Carol Poetry Contest of Kelly Deschler

Andrea, it is all too often that we forget those people who do not such a great Yuletide. This is a fine reminder of them and could only be better if every home that had a lonely person would read it. Congrats on your win and Happy New Year!

I like the idea that we can still enjoy Christmas even when we're by ourselves... This was a great interpretation of the song, Andrea. Beautifully written! Congrats on a win!

Tears running right now. Hope that my one and only son when and if ever he leaves remembers me on Christmas day years from now. This is how I imagine our Mom alone.

Your character may be lonely, but listening to music and decorating a tree mean she has great hope. As long as one doesn't lose their hope, it will turn around. Very lovely and touching, Andrea - I enjoyed it ... CayCay

Oh...Andrea...a tear jerker this...Superbly written. My baby girl won't be here for Christmas and I have no heart to decorate the tree, but I have to cause my dad and step-mom and later my hubby's parents are coming. Hard to get into the Christmas spirit without my baby. I hope you have a fabulous Christmas, dear.

This may seem bizarre but if I had a way to hug all the lonely people, I sure would, loved this poem Andrea.

- A great but touching poem, Andrea - Christmas alone sounds sad, but some choose to be alone - or go away for avoiding Christmas - Not everyone feels joy at this season - Good luck in the contest :) - hugs // Anne-Lise :)

This is a sad one and brings to mind that for some this is a lonely time of year. Well expressed.

Andie, I like the way you integrate the lyrics to the melancholic mood of the poem..... I remember the time we conducted Christmas Party to aged persons, and most of them voice their longing and wish that somehow one of their relatives will visit them.. soft and heartwarmingly sad.. ~Olive Eloisa

Sometimes we just need to cheer ourselves up with decorating. I think Christmas is the most emotional time of the year, both happy and sad. A moving piece.

Nothing can be worse than loneliness on Christmas. This especially applies to old people living on their own. A lovely sonnet that hits home! // paul

How sad yet true and real for some this is... To share Christmas with a tree... Indeed heart-wrenching this is, it reflects the loneliness, the pain, ,the solitude, of those who are forgotten , at Christmas it hurts a little bit more.., Outstanding sonnet.
