[this was written to celebrate July 2nd, the halfway point of the year]
I've been called... half pint half wit half awake ...and half a dozen other half-baked semi-insults that I have half a mind to half-heartedly ignore I'm somewhere in the middle now... mid-career middle class middle of the road excess baggage in my midsection dodging a mid-life crisis I woke up in the middle of a good dream Told my friends I ran a half marathon "so, you couldn't finish a whole one?" they joke as I half smile for some reason I half expected to be half the distance to the goal by now though the roadmap keeps changing I'm happy to be halfway to somewhere else

John, this is the sort of poem that needs to be read by many more people than have already. The problem, for me, is that once poems at PS leave the first page they tend to get overlooked for the newer poems by readers and that's a shame. Suffice to say, I love this and remained bemused by the idea that in some circles 60 is considered middle aged. When I turned 60 over 1 year ago I didn't think for one minute I'd live until 120. :) Great work. Cheers - Gary

Gary, it didn't escape my notice that this poem inspired by 2 July received a response from you on 2 July! I presume that was intentional, but even it was a happy coincidence it brought a big smile to my face and heart. To hear from an admired friend that a poem "needs to be read by many more people than have already" is a compliment of the highest order and fills me with gratitude. I feel that for just one person to read and respond is a gift of significant magnitude (I remember all too well the days when my efforts garnered no such attention) and any further readership is sweet icing on the cake. But you are so kind to think and say so, and such a generous soul is not to be taken for granted. Thank you. Cheers ~ John

This is more than half witty, dear John! I get a kick out of your clever humor with a bit of self effacement thrown in, lol! You are definitely “better than middling” in my book, friend and “brother”! Hugs! :)

This is such a clever write John, Kudos for such a fertile, talented, creative imagination - I absolutely agree with your last two lines dear friend, us too, better to be half way to somewhere else, than nowhere at all. Your themes are magic, another excellent poem, this one I am going to fave. Blessings and hugs John, Jennifer.

John, your poem is not a halfhearted attempt at being witty and earnest. Life in moderation is not half bad.
