Guardian Angel
When my daughter was a tiny babe I used to sing a song
To make her feel protected throughout the night so long
Beautiful guardian angel in the heavens high above
Please keep a watchful vigil o’er the baby that I love
As she got a little older we’d sing the song together
And ask the guardian angel to keep watch o’er her forever
Then on her seventh birthday she got a necklace very plain
With a tiny silver angel that would dangle from the chain
One day while she was playing the chain caught in her grasp
And the tiny fragile necklace was broken at the clasp
We put it in her jewelry box to keep it safe and sound
Until the day that another tiny clasp for it was found
One night at her grandmother’s house while upstairs in her bed
A fire broke out within the house and very quickly spread
Her grandma tried to get to her but the fire blocked her way
And then what we discovered next is a mystery today
As the fire trucks arrived in force to battle with the blaze
We found our darling daughter safely outside in a daze
We asked her how she found her way outside into the night
And she said “Daddy I was carried by an angel dressed in white”
The firemen had no answer for the stairs had all been blocked
And all the upstairs windows were closed and securely locked
Then I spotted something that made me think I was insane
For hanging from her tiny neck was an angel on a chain
Now there are things within this world that we cannot explain
And one of them is the mystery of the angel on the chain
But as for me I give my thanks to the Father up above
For sending His guardian angel to protect the one I love
