Grey Friend
Grey Friend
I might go into town today
nothing particular on my mind
I'll bring my small grey friend
we'll talk to pass the time
My small grey friend is fickle
sometimes he'll leave me be
while I drink my warm sweet coffee
I never know when he'll leave
I don't mind his presence
really wish him to go away
sometimes you need grey friends
there, to remind you anyway
I might stare at nothing
fixate on nothing essential
gaze into some far distance
become morose, maybe antisocial
Other days I'll write a verse
wrapped in barbed steel strands
rip and tear my lines
using stiff and stony hands
