There were potatoes planted deep In the early cold sping So soon that a frost still could come And nip the tender green Unharmed by a sudden frost's bite They grow to unusual height Then the blossoms faded fast Signaling harvest rites

Reminds me of my boyhood when my grandparents grew all their vegetables in a huge garden and canned just about everything that they could. You probably know that the old word for digging up potatoes was "helling," which my have led certain translator of the Bible to render Hades (original Gree) as Hell. Thanks for stopping by. / M

Hi Sara...I love this poem because it takes me back many years when I used to help my grandparents to dig up and collect the potatoes. Back then I wanted to become a farmer...instead I spent all my life teaching! I notice that both you and Doris wrote on this same subject:) // paul

He planted about 5 lbs of red potatoes..We have harvested about 8 5 gallon buckets of potatoes..My husband gives away a good amount of the harvest..I went out there on Memorial Day morning with him and we gather most of them..I am still sore and hurting...Sara
