Goethe's Path
On this woodland trail, I must travel alone
Crickets’ cries fade 'neath the morning sky
The side path to our stream is now overgrown
Sun climbs higher; I look up and cry, “Why?”
Spirits of abandoned dreams resurrect
In mist that hovers o’er the nearby marsh
Phantoms of a life we tried to protect
Through nature, locking out a world so harsh
Our favorite picnic spot is just ahead
Where rustling willow branches weep for you
Lying beneath on nature’s leafy bed
I long to feel you beside me here too
I rest just a bit, then begin anew
Even the birds seem to call out your name
Given a chance, far better I would love you
Without you, these woods do not seem the same
