Give Peace a Chance
Huge, sprawling armies, millions strong;
All convinced the war would not take long.
They had the world in their eyes;
It all but blinded them to the painful goodbyes.
Bombs exploding in a roaring blast
Bullets thundering past.
A soldier stepped on a landmine --
And for one eternal instant in the air, saw every comrade left behind.
Comrades true, marching two by two;
One went down and left the other to fight it through.
Valleys of ruin, trenches of mud;
Sparkling rivers, and rivers of blood.
Broken spirits, pieces of shell;
Makeshift crosses where somebody fell.
Still bodies carried over the foam
Bodies whose hearts never made it home.
Going on and on, a terrible war,
A war that nobody knew what they were fighting it for.
Please -- stop the firing, drop the lance,
Give peace a chance.
