Germinal: the Revolt At Le Voreux Mine

Their portraits hanging firmly from the naked wall, all our goods pawned for the cause. To see our vision and strike through Our lively evenings and peaceful nights conquered by a full moon and hunger pains. The speak easy is dead from receiving our wages in small francs, our children weak and frail There's barely bread and meat to last the week. Again, we look throughout our empty home before a dying fire, at last we look up at the remaining decorations. A print of the King and Queen steering down at us, he says "pawn them too", we couldn't get a penny out those useless folks Yet, they are watching us perish.

How sad, Derrick. There are financial woes in many contries today and people are holding more yard sales and pawning family heirlooms. Anything to avoid hunger and foreclosure. "We" shared "our" fish with five families and maybe that will help some of them. Still, my freezer is piled with grouper and snapper and I'm finding new ways to prepare them. Wish you really could have been there. Love, Carolyn
