Fourteen Pieces of Charcoal
it’s dark because there’s no light
a crooked root digs into darker and deeper ground
even though water flows in the dark
even though it flows in the hardened-time in the dark
water stands still motionless as if a ceased heart
water won’t ripple to find its way
the crooked root dug in deeper ground
got tangled with other rotten roots became a fossil
counts its age with a fingertip that falls off as it presses
the year-rings in a cycle of about every 5,700 years
Note. Fourteen pieces of charcoal: carbon-14
