For Nothing
For Nothing
Take a tower built of sorrow;
Let it crumble to the ground.
Build a dream from out the fragments;
Soon the dream will tumble down.
Live a lifetime, work and wonder.
If you're doing what you ought;
But to find when it is over,
That your striving was for naught.
Mold a dream to make life brighter.
Build a hiding place of song.
Live on dreams and on the morrow;
When you awaken all is gone.
You can't hide the darkness;
Though it's shrouded in the light.
Blow the flame from out the candle.
Then breaks reality of night.
Life is urgent, life is earnest;
We have God alone to trust
Though our dreams may fall around us,
Though our treasure ruin and rust.
