Footsteps

Familiar silent footsteps echo everywhere Yet there is no one there Here in the sanctuary of home The footsteps return Haunting my every move Like a vampire feeding on sanity My peace of mind Wasted in the darkness A lifeless soul drained of all reason A whisper or is it the wind Fear dries to sand in my throat Reminders from buried memories Flashback in silent movie reels A whispered threat As the mind cowers in submission Yielding the body to the inevitable To the death found in another’s destiny. The touch tightens Garrotting the air from my throat No scream in the silence And darkness brings blessed peace As the pain ends! Form: Free Verse
