Flaco's Memorial

From 4 – 5 in Central Park, Beneath his favorite tree, So many fans of Flaco* gathered – Yes, including me. Around the trunk were letters, Poems and pictures and bouquets From all of us who knew how Flaco Brightened up our days. Some people never saw him But still followed all the writings, Plus the videos and pictures That accompanied the sightings. I left my poems in tribute, Heard the speeches and the songs And await the hoped-for statue In the place where it belongs. *a male Eurasian eagle-owl who escaped from the Central Park Zoo and survived for a year in the city

I wonder if Flaco could comprehend the pleasure that his presence brought to his admirers… I guess not but it would be nice to think so. I looked out on our cherry tree a few weeks back to see a green parakeet sat there. I’ve looked everyday since to no avail. RIP Flaco

My guess would be he crashed into a reflective window. Heaven knows how many birds go that way. I must nurse a dozen dazed goldfinches every spring/summer. Most make it… alas some don’t.

Dear Ilene, Your heartfelt tribute to Flaco is both touching and poignant. It beautifully captures the sense of community and shared connection among those touched by his presence. Your words honor his memory and the impact he had on all who knew him, whether in person or through the stories shared by others. The image of fans gathering beneath his favorite tree in Central Park, leaving letters, poems, and bouquets, is incredibly moving. Your poem is a testament to the enduring legacy of love and admiration for Flaco, and I'm sure your words would touch him. By the way I wrote a poem about a namless Eurasian Eagle Owl called Gnarled Shadows which is more like a Poe type poem. Maybe I should name him Flaco. - Blessings, my Friend, Daniel
