Father of My Father

You came to see me today Only it wasn't you He stood still looking at me Staring into my soul Neither of us speaking I could see you in him The way his suspenders rested on his shoulders Shoe worn from wear Belly hard and round from years of good eating So silent we stood and then I smiled The familiar stranger smiled and nodded in return He turned and shuffled away Thanks for coming to see me grandpa I miss you

My daddy wore suspenders Monica. He would not have known what I was talking about had I said "braces". A nice poem and haunting. Thank you for your comments on my poem. Welcome to this nice place. Love, Joyce

@ Anna Marie, thanks for taking the time to read my piece. Suspenders are used as a fashion accessory by men to hold up pants. Two straps come up over the shoulders and button to the inside front of the pant. My grandfather wore suspenders not braces.

An interesting write - I lingered a while on 'suspenders' - maybe braces would have been easier on the mind and more apt for it caused a little confusion when trying to picture... Hope that helps a little, otherwise a lovely little piece I much enjoyed reading - so keep on penning! Kindest thoguhts, Anna-Marie.
