An African man once said to me A parent is like a mighty tree To understand who we’ve become We must look close at where we’re from He smile at me while bending down And picked a leaf up from the ground He pointed to the other leaves And said “they’re here because of trees” The leaf was just a simple hint To help me know his message sent From parents we are leaf and limb And we exist because of them And as you grow into a tree Remember how you came to be
