Eyes Wide Open
Eyes wide open, never a doubt
Crouched head low awaiting officers shout
Don’t look over the top in case sniper might see
Then up goes the call all men follow me
But his last words
But not one show of sympathy
Then down goes Freddy, Jock and Stan
And others I knew not,
But all brave to a man
Shells are exploding
I hear men cry
But all I can think is
How blue is the sky
I see the white and clouds and
Feel the warm breeze ruffle my hair
And for a brief moment I’m home
And all who I love are there
I see my wife and my son
And our child yet to come
Whilst those all around
Are screaming out for their mum
And the last thing I see,
Is my beautiful wife looking lovingly at me
Whilst I am holding the hand of my boy,
LittleTommy
Tom we both love you
So promise you’ll come home
to me and your son
And I promise we will make it
Just like this never begun
And the blue sky is fading
And her words are no more
But her tears drip from my
Cheek and fall to the floor
And then I close my eyes
And I am no more
