Evergreen

My mind traveled back in time like it often does when I visit our hometown Like the many times before, I drove down your street today And I felt the familiar tug of nostalgia Pulling me over to the side of the road My eyes marveled at the sight I reminisced Standing there, only much taller, fuller, and stronger than in our younger years, Was our beloved evergreen tree In awe and wonder, I saw the two of us in each other's arms Young and innocent Holding tight to the sacred bond of first love Sheltered under those burly boughs Cool August nights signalled summer drawing to a close But those turquoise eyes held coy looks Heartbeats skipped and fluttered Soft lips lingered Hands wandered The cherished memory unfolds And the sparks that became fiery flames still simmer of a rare love that would forever be A part of that evergreen tree
