When I look up and see
the sky above me
I see the bright stars
and sometimes red Mars
I oft wonder why
the ancients did try
to see creatures up there
high in the air
And what things were foretold
in those days of old
when the sun disappeared
and a comet appeared
They tried to make sense
of random events
by discerning a pattern
in the movements of Saturn
Though their ideas were wrong
they found before long
at the same time each year
those same signs did appear
So up here in the North
when Orion strode forth
in the low southern sky
they knew winter was nigh
With measurements refined
a new 'science' was defined
that then came to be
known as Astrology
And as centuries passed
there came reason at last
and mankind said goodbye
to those gods in the sky
But though now we may mock
When you sit and take stock
A great debt we now owe
to those men long ago
It was their observations
and refined calculations
that has now come to be
known as Astronomy
