End This War

I want to try and make this plain; My first years of school we learned to read by meeting characters called Dick & Jane. They made us feel like these young people had it all and were hot, Even had a black and white dog named Spot. The older I got the wiser I became. I realized that Spot was not just a name. It was their way of referring to people of my race, To compare us to a dog what a disgrace. We read: "See Spot run and you could hear run nigga' run. We read: "See Spot jump and you could hear Massa' is this high enough. What were they thinking, my first years of school; That I would not realize what was going on and just be a fool. Then; as even now some educators are cruel. We have to forgive and we have to let go. It is the real character of my people that some do not know. We were not born with silver spoons in our mouths are on some fine platter; But our lives and our contributions they really do matter. The anger we have about Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and others, Will heal as soon as ALL realize that we are truly sisters and brothers. You might deny me in the flesh and treat me as if I am no good, But whether red, yellow, black or white we are all from the same wood. And a chip off the block never flies to far; So how long do we want to continue in this fight...we need to end this war. PEACE Penned 3/10/2015
