Embers of December
The Embers of December
Soon to slip away,
fast and sleek
the autumn burn of firewood and leaves.
Color lays a vibrant palette
in faint greenish hues,
pale yellows edged upon orange red trees.
Leaves drop
fast and quiet,
slow and deliberate to float in the air.
Some dance and sway
right then left
drifting in a straightened crooked line.
Each fall releases free
the embrace to take hold
begin the gradual demise invigorating earth below.
In a hurried rushing moment
only naked trunks remain
northeast winters drop in place, cold and icy on the ground.
The house is closed,
windows and doors shut tight
locking out the chill savoring the warm inside.
Burning hot and red
scent of apple wood rises in the flames
embers of December glow and protect in the winter nights.
