Early Morning Sonnet
A place to leave behind the wicked lies,
no matter how I try; I vainly seek
a solitary place away from meek
and easy minds. So far from the sickly sighs
that drown my heart in tears. The dead and wise
will call it dreaming wildly. Fancy leaks
in quickly, bringing red and paints my cheeks
a fearful shade; I break the binding ties
the earth can hold to men who solicit
a life the same as mine. The forgetful
among us say I wonder vaguely. Dare
I yell to heaven? Screaming explicit
truth to power. Still I stay so mindful
of people like me; minds alike not bare.
