Lucid dreaming: How-to, benefits, and risks

I’ve died many times over. Every night when I lay down my weary self to rest, my consciousness is extinguished. I experience nothing until I wake up inside my sleeping body—in dreams disconnected from ‘reality’ and the external world. Consciousness resurfaces in the morning upon my return to the wakening world. At some point each day, each of us slips beneath the pillow’s spell and drifts into a heavenly state. We temporarily lose control of our conscious mind and become timeless, ageless, and boundless. We become dream weavers creating dreams with their hidden language and symbolic metaphors. In our dreams, our subconscious allows us to process the day and reflect upon it. Sometimes we embrace our hidden, dormant fears and unfulfilled passions. Sometimes we even find the secrets of our soul. Do you have recurring dreams? I do. Psychologists say that recurring dreams can tell us about our unresolved issues, emotional baggage, and internal conflicts as well as a whole range of emotions. In one of my recurring dreams, I’m Don Quixote wearing a suit of armor unsuccessfully fighting my own windmills. In another, I’m watching a violent storm when a tornado suddenly emerges from the clouds. I’m surrounded by chaotic flying objects and high winds that tear through my neighborhood. I manage to escape the chaos, turmoil, and destruction but awaken out of breath with adrenaline coursing through my veins. I ponder...what is the meaning behind the dreams I weave. Would my subconscious tales be telling me?
mysterious night silent mother of our dreams yeast for human fears dark, mysterious holding a promise of light, shadow dreams appear movies of the night, dreams open us to new worlds of dread and delight

You have escorted us into a wonderful world of dreams and the subconscious workings of the human mind through a spontaneous sequence of images. Enjoyed reading about the puzzling paradox called mind. I too get recurring dreams.... of failure to act in a time frame... failing to cook and serve before invited guests or failure to reach a meetng in time...failure to get dressed for a function! Isn't the working of our mind mysterious! Great Haibun with beautiful haikus.... dear Sara.

I’m not that familiar with the form. You have used it to your advantage with this gem. Joseph used his dreams to advantage. I hope only your good dreams come true.

Thanks for stopping by, Richard. You're right, Joseph used his dreams to his advantage. Perhaps we all can. May you have good dreams too. I appreciate your kind comments. Sara

This is such a profound write! Dream weavers, i absolutely love the smoothness of your lines and how they flow, and how you play around with words in such an elegant manner makes me sit in awe and admire! I have two beliefs about dreams, scientific as well as spiritual, but lets stick to psychology, and subconscious conveying suppressed thoughts thru dreams to us, they reveal our innermost thoughts and emotions, sometimes when im anxious and going through challenging times i too do have dreams -

Hi 'Ink'. Thanks for stopping by and reading my latest creation. I appreciate your compliments about my words and also appreciate your insights. I agree, dreams have many levels--scientific and spiritual. I'm glad we share a similar recurring dream about tornadoes. Those dreams of mine usually indicate I'm highly conflicted or spiritually unrest. Sometimes dreams fascinate me. Thanks for sharing your light as well. Enjoy your day.

Of tornadoes etc or other calamities and me battling against them trying to rise! So that explains alot about how one feels and ones mind is at deep within: and theres our intuition also talking to us through dreams sometimes: i really love those haikus: and i cant pick a fave line because this poem is too good! And everything your write about is so profound and so insightful and gets me to think: you really are a gifted poetess! Beautiful poetess! Sending you light today and always

- This line hit me, Sara "fights against my own windmills" ... - both in sleep and in the waking state we always fight with "unresolved problems, emotional baggage" an excellent poem ... many thanks ... feel you think for several of us :) - hugs
