Author's Notes:   This is a "Tanka" or a Japanese verse form write on the subject of "Despair."  I originally wrote this Tanka on February 16, 2015 as part of my first book publication.  "Despair," per se, equates to "hopelessness," "loss of hope," and in many circumstances -- "giving up."  Be that as it may, I go on to make a very positive statement about the importance of always fighting back, showing no fear, and never giving up. Throughout our world today across many diverse societies there are enough people who are at one time or another living in despair whether it be psychotic or self-inflected. This Tanka is written with these unfortunate people in mind.  I believe the take away here is for all us of to be mindful of our fellow man and to see how each of us may be of help to someone thus inflected.  (In another companion Tanka I wrote, entitled "Joy," I touch on that subject and attempt to show it as a counterbalance to the negative trauma generated by someone living in "Despair."  I try, in effect, to give us all something to think about when we're potentially confronted with "Despair"  in our lives or someone else's life.  (Gary Bateman - May 8, 2015) (Tanka)

You're right about this Liam!! It's always better to avoid despair when and wherever possible. It can literally destroy people who suffer from it chronically. Best Always, Gary

Those who are chronically depressed. It's so hard to make them understand this. but we cannot feel joy when we allow despair to overtake us!! Unfortunately, some people have chemical imbalances and then there are the bi polar people. What a complicated life and how unfair that some people have a harder time coping with despair than others.

You're right about this Andrea. The people you mention with the severe circumstance (through no fault of their own) fall outside my entreaty here with this Tanka. Be that as it may, for the people in the great average my note may hit the target. You're right too about the inherent unfairness for people caught in psychological cross-fires beyond their immediate control. I know that I certainly feel that Mental Health issues and problems could be much be addressed by our elected officials in the USA. (Actually here in Germany these types of services are robustly supported the German federal government.) This is a part of medical care that not emphasized enough in the USA. (This is my observation over the years.) Best! Gary

Nad, Unfortunately this part of the essence of life. Nothing is easy, especially when it's worthwhile and you have to fight for it. My personal motto has always been, "When you're down and out, pick yourself up and always come out swinging." (Just try not to get knocked out -- HA HA!!) My new book of poetry ("Conversations with My Muse") is out on the new book list. Please check it out at Amazon. (You might like it!!) Best Always, Gary
