December Observations

Hail to December! – a magical month, indeed, like no other in the calendar, When neighborhoods come alive with lights and decorations to remember, Reindeer on roofs with Rudolph in the lead, Street corner Santas ring bells, Folks bundle up tight and take in the sights. Main street churches feature a nativity scene with a manger and animals to honor the Savior born on Christmas day almost lost in the annals, While local stores focus on raking in the green Carolers, becoming a thing of the past, Singing “The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.”

For sure "to honor the Savior born on Christmas day almost lost in the annals," - sadly.

Yep. I'm afraid the commercialization of Christmas is almost beyond control.

Even I kinda like December, although not the over-the-top commercialization of Christmas...When I taught at Loyola University of Chicago, guess who led his department's students in caroling all the nuns who worked there? -- That's right. Me. lol. I knew more Christmas songs than any of the undergrads. Hard to believe. ~ Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

Hmmm...Are you sure you don't have a drap of Catholic blood in you????

It's a shame about the loss of carollers. There's nothing more warm and fuzzy than bundled up, frosty figures singing precious songs outside your window then coming in for wine or hot cocoa. Elizabeth

Oh, I agree, Elizabeth. I think safety has been a factor in most of them not caroling for the last few years. I always enjoyed them so much, too.

A happy month for sure Milton, sadly the real meaning of Christmas diminishes more every year. Many haven't a clue why it's celebrated at all. Tom

I'm afraid you're right about that, Tom. I was thinking of that when I wrote this poem. I'm afraid it picked up some of my cynicism, or shall I say sarcasm, about what we have done with Christmas.
