Death of a Flower

A club meeting A road trip A walk A conversation A few failed attempts A move And a drop of courage That’s all it took That’s all it took for our friendship to blossom Petals made of pages filled with color Leaves made of oatmeal A stem made of words shared and saved on a screen A blossom so beautiful it brings a soft smile to my lips It grows as love bathes it like sunlight It glows as trust feeds it like soil A handful of pills A mind full of fear A few misplaced words on top of a few misinterpreted sentences And the blossom shrivels The sky grows dark as hurt and pain cloud the sun The soil turns to sand as all trust dries up Tears fall like rain And fear crashes through like thunder Doubt flashes like lightning and sleep flies away like the birds The storm rages on threatening three new blossoms trying to take root I guard the blossoms with all my heart As apologies flow from my lips like rain down a drain A handful of pills A mind full of fear A few misplaced words on top of a few misinterpreted sentences Is that all it really takes to destroy something so beautiful Are blossoms really that fragile If so do I truly even want to guard the three new blossoms Heaven knows they could grow thorns
