Darker Than the Deepest Sea
Darker than the deepest sea
the TV was showing the news at eight
it was about a war
and a man ,not young but not old
shooting his machine gun from a roof
down, down, down…
empty shells bounced around his
feet like rain in a duck pond
so listen…the next thing you knew
the top of his head flew clean off
and pirouetted out of shot
(don’t know where)
a present from another sniper
shooting up, up, up?
and a blood pool the shape of Africa ,Africa
and darker than the deepest sea
crept across the floor, containing his life,
his wife, his family, his car
and his thoughts
then his friends stepped into the African sea
and splashed his soul on to their chins and into their
teeth and between their gasps
and you know?
it was darker than the deepest sea.
