Curtains Are Drawn

CURTAINS ARE DRAWN Curtains are drawn yesterday, A hushed silence, floating in the room's Empty space, Thoughts remain unspoken, A group of people in shock, following Procedure like clockwork, feel Their furrowed way through The devastation of an ended life. Later will come the sombre pageantry, For now the family's human grief, Played out with quiet dignity. She, who held them together, is gone, Leaving the ancient stage for another To take her place, remembering A faithful service to millions. All enter the dark tunnel of mourning, To respect with gratitude a gracious lady.

This poem was written shortly after the death of Queen Elizabeth - in fact the day after.

I wrote this poem in the aftermath of the death of the longest reigning monarch of all time. I had a great deal of respect for Queen Elizabeth II - for her commitment to serving the UK, British territories and Commonwealth. I am not an ardent monarchist. I will see how the situation develops.
