Come Daybreak
When all has been exhausted
and day has turned to dark,
you'll find me on these sandy shores,
the ones I used to mark
with stick in hand;
I never planned
for this to be where I would stand
come nightfall.
The migrant men I followed
once led me from these shores
they led me round the earth
before they led me back once more
so I could gaze,
spend all my days,
in awe of ocean's silver-grays
come daybreak.
I find it hard to take in stride,
what I've been told of late:
that every ripple visible,
the paltry and the great,
could tell with ease,
with expertise
my life's triumphs and tragedies
come nightfall.
So if it were a choice at all
to leave these shores behind,
in clouds of dust, you'd watch me part,
in body, soul and mind;
Best tell the seas,
the sky, the trees,
"Make way!", for I'll be newly free
come daybreak.
