Coffee At Dawn
Coffee at dawn with dew on the lawn
And whispering winds in the trees;
Stars disappear as morning clears
For all the world to see.
Rivers flow and cornfields grow
In endless waves of gold:
Oceans of plenty with dreams of many
Awakening, young and old.
As cities bustle, toil and tussle
Competing for modern success;
Children play and preachers pray
Everyone is blessed.
Those in positions of prestige and power
With the rest on the road to the peak
Of mountainous places achieved by long races
Of running, not always on feet.
Tired and weary, wasted and bleary-
Eyed from losing ground;
New babies born in the midst of storms
In this new wide world they’ve found.
Filled with flowers in spring and new wedding rings
As lovers begin new lives;
With licorice and lace while battles take place
And people fight wars and die.
Down in the shadows where mystery runs deep
And light takes flight in all forms;
And swan songs sing us out of our sleep
With coffee at dawn each morn.
