Christmas Stocking

No fancy stockings And no big mantel either Every day stockings Hung over a chair with care For old Santa Claus to fill Just as excited As the richest kids in town Who hung fancy socks On big beautiful mantels With higher expectations Those hard scrabble days The only sweets that we saw Were in our stocking On that cold December morn Along with juicy orange By: Joyce Johnson 11/6/11 Won a 3rd in contest For Russell Sivey’s contest “Christmas Stocking Tribute”

Our stockings were filled with fruit, Joyce, but we still enjoyed them on Christmas morning. My folks didn't have a lot of money either, so my expectations were not very high. It was the spirit of Christmas that we all loved most, not the material aspects of the holiday. This is a lovely, nostalgic entry for Russell's contest. Wishing you success! Love, Carolyn

This made me want to cry Joyce. So many kids have nothing for Christmas. May I add you as a fav poet if I have not already.

Enjoyed reading your swatch of Christmas memory in poetic form..Beautiful presentation..Good luck in the contest..Reads like winners' circle to me..Thanks for stopping by, reading, and commenting on my work..I too have tried hominy but I do not really care for it..Some grits are hominy grits..I am not sure how hominy is made so those grits I don't know exactly how they are made..Grits are somewhat bland but I add cheese usually to mine for the Calcium..I cook mine with some milk also..Sara

Calcium is important for people of all ages, Sara. Good suggestion on adding cheese to the grits.
