Charcoal Sheep

Charcoal Sheep Watery eyed thoughts came, Zap! Pow! a short circuited brain. Inward turned burned ocular pain, too many thoughts to restrain I’m a cheap sheep making my mistakes again. Smell my seared wool going down the drain. Ba ba ba, sorta blackish, wishing I was right as rain. Worlds accessed by my fingertips help to quicken this sheepish heartbeat. I bang on my keyboard, DELETE, DELETE! Ripping out digital scores, sheet by sheet. Never once listening to warnings. All the while the other sheep bleat. Instead I feel my brain drain as my barnyard thoughts strain. I can’t translate what they’re saying, but I feel them point and complain. My paradigm won’t shift though, I have a glass ego to maintain. So I download my brain into my mainframe. I’m watching you fake shepherd boy, black sheep never sleep. Into the darkness we’re destined to creep. We have those sad sadistic secrets you’ve burdened us to keep. So I smudge charcoal thoughts dangerously deep. I prefer paths, dangerous and steep. Within the silence of the lambs, you devilishly relish hearing me weep. You defile fleece as white as snow. I resist going where those sheep go. Their path leads to your fictional rainbow. They’re not safe even though they travel slow. The True Shepherd wouldn’t lead them to and fro. I listen to my uneasy queasy feeling and exit your proverbial row. I wish I could stop them too but, ba ba ba, off to the slaughter they go.

A FAV for my list, Richard. Very deep thoughts displayed in wonderful rhyming poetry. It was intriguing to see the connections you make with that fine mind of your, my friend. Definitely a road less taken kind of guy ... so am I. Write On! Bill

This is an excellent poem - I read it a couple of times and i am sure a few did. each of us our own perspective, each one of us receiving a message. i can't begin to tell you Richard how hard it has been for me this year, i fell down badly about 2 years i missed a step and flew down a further three. MRI's, Cat scans, nuclear x rays, normal x rays, A nerve route block intravenously on my spinal column TWICE, and a spinal tap to take fluid from my spine - why all this because initially they thought I had sciatica and now finally say probably have to have a back op as two nerves seem to trapped in my lower back. Meanwhile in constant pain. I enjoy your poems and glad you are back. Blessings Jennifer

Loved reading this, a brilliant Story Telling poem with a beautiful message, reminds me of poets that had to give messages or teachings to Kings and Queens via poetry not to be, well beheaded. The irony here makes me smile (not in the poem) But that you have made this story come to real life.

Oh we don’t need the internet to lead us to the slaughter Richard, it’s always been this way, I remember reading that the French soldiers at Passchendaele in WW1 made sheep sounds when heading towards the front lines, they knew what was in store and were just letting their superiors know that they knew, brilliant poem by the way, and very relevant to contemporary life, the world was always dark since man came along, cheers David

Trying to decipher. Is it porno? Propaganda? Something both entices and repulses this fellow at the same time. I believe delete is his only real option. Interesting poem Richard

I guess it could be although I was thinking of the internet in the many black holes that it draws people into including conspiracy theories. False prophets and the such, leading the sheep to their demise.
