Ceiling Rose

CEILING ROSE An alabaster ceiling rose is ever so delicate, a round swirling pattern that is a joy to look at. It used to be white but now it’s all yellow with centuries of grime and age old smoke. People stop and wonder what went on under the hanging lights, what was said, who loved who and who dared to dance close. Today the huge dance hall is empty and the ceiling rose and lights have nothing but a sound of silence for company.

Dear Nick, I love old abandoned buildings and often imagine what stories they could tell. The first poem I entered here years ago, was about going back to the abandoned house that my grandparents lived in from the day they married until they died. The personification is entitled, 'Where the Heart Resides', and is the title of my published books, volume one and two. Love what you have written here, Nick. Only one with a poets heart would see it this way. Elaine C. George
