Brigham Young

Brigham Young, the Mormon prophet Pointed to the west; they crossed it North, east, south, west sent colonies, And has his name on universities. Brigham Young, who led the Mormons after the assassination of their founding prophet Joseph Smith, led the Mormon Pioneers from "Winter Quarters" (a spot near what is now Omaha Nebraska) to what is now Salt lake City, Utah, then established colonies in most of the western states, south-western Canada, and northern Mexico. Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, is the largest religious, and one of the largest private, universities in the USA, and has branches in Hawaii and Idaho. There is a monument in Washington DC to B.Y. for him being the great colonizer. Most groups that went west did so seeking gold or land, but didn't worry about those who followed. When the Mormons crossed, they widened mountain gaps, made maps, planted seeds, set up river crossings etc to make it easier for later groups to follow.

Thanks SKAT. I have Utah Pioneer ancestry on my mother's side. I used to spend summer vacations in a very small town in southern Utah. Pioneer Day (24 July) was celebrated as much if not more than than the 4th of July.

Thanks for commenting. Many friends are BYU Cougars fans, but I'm not a sports fan, nor an alumnus of BYU. While in the military, I attended about 8 different colleges and universities. I have AA/AS from Santa Ana College and Monterey Peninsula College, and a BS from Excelsior.

Thanks for commenting. BY was a bit of a character though. He had some funny ideas towards the end of his life which were never adopted as Mormon theology or philosophy. He definitely made his mark in the world though.

I have a picture a gun that Joseph Smith fired in his shoot out with vigilantes ending in his death - finishing by being thrown out of a window . Real history shows he was a charlatan. translating an unknown language of Reformed Egyptian from the gold plates - all lost of course - what a load of complete American Tosh !

What about the poem? Your views about Smith weren't really relevant to it.
