Boys In School

BOYS IN SCHOOL Boys in school - I sympathise with them They must reorganize their brain stem They are made to sit in rows And try to see what each one knows We must try to work quietly Behave always with propriety No chasing after our neighbour Or throwing small objects at the door Like erasers, ( ideal for throwing) We must keep our minds a-growing No shouting or indeed talking loudly Write neatly, do all our work proudly. Do exactly what teacher tells you And be ashamed of that eraser you threw Let’s understand their predicament. This is a girls’ environment Obviously girls love it because as a rule Even in free time they like to play “school” Ever seen a boy play “school”? No. Far from the building’s where he wants to go There are boy wild seeds to be sown. Where is the training for him to “stand alone”? And “do it his way” like Sinatra? He’d be better off in a place like Sumatra, Where the rubber grows for erasers And the world is full of pursued and chasers.

I enjoyed reading your poem very much, those boys and erasers, yes, I recall getting a few erasers to the back of my head in school, while I sat there the picture of an angel ~~

The last four lines I loved the most, Sydney. Nice wit and humor in it.
