Belated
Oh, what I would have told you
if I had known you were leaving.
But you were gone in a glimpse
and I am dumb and grieving.
It is late but some can be written,
my conscience allows no less.
You were a woman singularly sublime
few men could have been as blessed.
In every manner, form, and fashion
you were an example supreme.
You were of a quality not to be found
except in an unforgettable dream.
I know I didn't listen lovingly enough
to counsel I too often tended to ignore.
I discounted what you had to say.
I'm sorry for that and for so much more.
Had I had the time to open my heart
these are the words I'd whisper to you.
Yes, I should have said them before--
but somehow I believe you already knew.
