Nobody knows what goes on behind this hotel door ‘Mr Smith’ isn’t with his wife of that I’m pretty sure! He’s with his mistress Sue, they are having an affair But he is a cheating love rat and he doesn’t really care A barrage of fists is flying at number twenty-two Sally covers her bruises, what else can she do Her man is a bully and hits where nobody can see She’s got no one to turn too otherwise she would flee Harry is all alone since his dear wife has died He’s desperately lonely but filled with such pride His family only live on the other side of the city But are so busy with their lives, isn’t that a pity Post builds up in his letter box, there’s milk left at his door Neighbours think they’ve seen him but they aren’t really sure The police arrive; break down his door and Harry’s lying dead He’d fallen down the stairs; dried blood lay round his head Peter is an alcoholic and he suffers from depression He has bouts of violence, he’s known for his aggression Since his wife walked out on him he’s attempted suicide His life has gone downhill since he lost his lovely bride Little Sally wants to hide when she sees Phil the baby sitter He makes her do ‘things’ with him, if she won’t he says he’ll hit her She’s subjected to sexual abuse that no child should endure But her parent’s are oblivious when they walk out that door Nobody really knows what goes on behind closed doors I wonder would you divulge what happens behind yours? Congrats Jan and very deep write, like you just opened doors, at the heart break hotel. We all have been hurt or have hurt someone and to those that are lonely, you are never truly alone. No matter, how bad it hurts.

It is a dark deep write for me John thankfully the lines have come from my imagination and not real life but I am sure there are people who can relate to my poem:-( hugs jan xx

Jan, it definitely does, but I bet many of us know that you can write deep thoughtfull poems. Just because the humor is your special gift doesn't mean that's all you can write. But you know that already, right?

Incredible writing Jan :-) You did a great job on tough subjects that needs to be talked about with "doors" wide open. Every word is so true and thoughtfully crafted. It is shocking the different ways people behave in public and 'behind closed doors'. This should be made poster size and hung in every Drs., Dentists, Government waiting areas etc. as a public service learning tool. An important, remarkable piece. One to be proud of :-) a fave, 7+ lynnxxx

Thanks so much Lynn I am very proud of this poem, in fact I think it is one of my best this year. Its an emotive subject which I found hard to write about but sadly we see in some terrible stories of abuse in the press and I guess some people here can relate to it on a personal level:-( hugs Jan xx

Thanks Andrea I will be honest it was a very difficult poem - if you read my comment to Marti you will see I feel very strongly about the subject of abuse having worked with kids who were abused and also one of the staff at the same day nursery was beaten by her partner - I was only 16 when i worked there, it will stay with me forever:-( hugs jan xx

True Vera there is a lot of infidelity that takes place in homes too. I guess with domestic abuse people are maybe unwilling to intervene and its only when we here of tragedies they think ... if only. :-( hugs Jan xx

Jan this is such an amazing poem. As I have been telling you, you can master so many different types of poetry, such a pleasure to read this. With so much misery in this world nice to see someone who brings such empathy, when so many just wish to add to it! Great write.

I think I am proving there is more to me that poopy lightweight poems Arthur. I was listening to Suzanne Vega's Luka and that inspired me to write about abuse. I hope Richard likes my take on the doors theme:-) hugs Jan xx

jan, wow, wonderfully penned, oh yes behind closed doors some awful things can happen, even in my building I think odd things happen, I hear shouting or a loud thump that seems out of place, as for behind my door, well you may see Snuggles Le Chat on the diningroom table, and Smudges Le Chat drinking from the tap in the bathtub while I am absorbed writing a poem~

What a wonderful cast of characters you have introduced to us, Jan. My heart goes out to Little Sally and you brought to life the pain endured by people who suffer loss and battle depression. Excellent entry for Richard's contest. Wishing you success, Jan!

Truth displayed openly for the perusal of the world...doors left ajar, windows edged open, closets explored and the soul poured forth so that pain spills freely... all this and more awaits the reader as this narrative begins. Very well written, Emile. #7

Thanks Emile I never know where my muse will take me and this was a very difficult poem to write but these things mustn't be hidden as they do happen all too frequently and it's not until there is a tragedy we know what has taken place:-( hugs Jan xx
