Away From Home
On the day they went dancing
They all wore red
Women wore high heeled shoes
Men strong and handsome tagging along
They all danced to zilizopendwa
The music that reminded them of mother land
Africa being such a far away home
Dancing and music was the tradition that brought the young men and the beautiful women together
This was the umbilical cord connecting them to the life they left behind
So many memories came to life with the music
Like their classmates, neighbours and friends
Like their mums, uncles, dads and aunties
Who sang these songs to them
Like the wars they grew up watching and feeling
Like the famine and drought that some of them had to endure
Like the diseases that wiped communities and agriculture
Like the love and lovers some of them left behind
They danced the night away, making the most of it
