Avarice - Greed

Pandora, Oh Pandora, you're to blame Man's avarice has doomed us, one and all So blatantly we covet without shame And turn our heads away, when beggars call. In fact, it is a shared character flaw For who among us here, desires less? Do you feel like your portion is too small? It's when we're wanting more, when we transgress. Yet sharing the world's wealth would be a mess For who decides, too much or not enough and who decides a fast and fair process? Those questions there alone, are more than tough Who would not put their finger on the scale While heads were turned 'cause someone hollereed, SALE. by Daniel Turner Spenserian sonnet ABAB BCBC CDCD EE

We all suffer from the greed to hoard things, never caring to think, there are many deprived of even the basic necessities of life. Until this thoughtlessness ceases, there will be mounting inequalities of wealth in this world. a thought inviting poem dear Daniel.

An excellent Spenserian sonnet Daniel. The world is in terrible mess and it’s all down to greed. When you look back it wasn’t so bad, people were content with what they had and need before want was their creed… Belle

I think one store around here used to have what they called blue light specials. Those that were not advertised and while people were shopping the special was announced. I am sure that many people went running. LOL..Thanks for sharing. Sara

In the land I live in… food is rationed herein CA or behind locked cases.. Eggs here are 8 dollars for dozen. People struggling to keep lights on. Last year my electric bill was 100now it’s 300dollars a month? With no snow. People are losing money by overtaxation. Theatres closed during Covid. Nobody I know is dying for money .. Yet they donate to churches. Have kids in private schools. I know nobody selfish. They Can barely make it through life. Pangie xx

First law of nature, "survival of the fittest" It may sound blackhearted but it is a fact. I'm in the boat with you Pangie. just keep paddling. Thank you for a most enjoyable visit and commentary:)

Excellent! It appears we're of the same mindset. Why do we do it? What do we get from it? Its just human nature.

Skillfully composed, realistic, wise--Danny! My Sunday School class members once discussed materialism. Early on, we all claimed NOT to be materialistic. It took us about ten minutes to confess we were! Janice

Amazing isn't it. It's just human nature to want more. That's why the Bible says,"Thou shalt not covet" He knew:) Thank you for the friendly visit, Janice. I hope the storms don't get you tonight.

Thank you, Margarita. there was a time when things like washing machines, refrigerators, basically all appliances were wants. Over the years we now see them as necessities. but are they really. Could we still survive today without them? Yes. It would be difficult but in those days life was difficult. We always want more!

'Let he who is without stones cast the first sin"....or something like that. Trying to satisfy the wants of man or mankind is like digging a hole in the sand, an endless and impossible task. Or as the bumper sticker said..."THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY"

Many blame Pandora aka Eve. But the main culprit is Adam.

Hello Victor. How have you been. Regardless who started this mess. We are each going to be held responsible for our own actions. Great to see you. I hope the world has been treating you kindly.

Thank you, Gershon. If it were only that simple. Unfortunately, I think it's a little deeper than that. I appreciate your time and comment. Have a great day.

What can I say other than this is the way civilisation has always worked Daniel, who decides? is always the man wielding the most power and biggest arsenal, who desires less? speaks for itself, as indeed does your final stanza, excellent sonnet, cheers David

- A good question : "For who decides, too much or not enough" - When we look at enormous wealth ... and unimaginable poverty ... it makes the world and life unfair ... wish there were no such differences ... - sale or no sale ... I have more than enough ... and does not run - An excellent poem, Daniel - hugs
