Autumn's Pause
Autumn comes in all its magnificent glory
yet it's just a pause away from winter
soon all too soon the world will fall asleep
everything seemingly dead and withered
Autumn's pause is a time to recoup and rebuild
enjoying the balmy windy days of flying leaves
the days getting so short as we reap natures bounties
cold chill in the air, breath visible streams out
Now all the hibernating animals and insects disappear
to sleep through the long dark dismal days of winter
all around us now, a blanket of fine powder snow and ice
drifts of eight and more feet deep, cover all from sight
The time of mulled wine sipped in front of roaring fire
to hang the tinsel and deck the tree with baubles
smell of spices from Christmas pudding gently steaming
ah, those heavenly scents of gingerbread and eggnog
Now is the time to regroup and make future plans
soon it will be the time of rebirth and new starts
dormant lies the spring bulbs soon to break open
and once again flood the world in glorious colour
So once more the cycles restart, each one a beauty
slumber now while you can and wake up full of joy
to greet spring with light heart and new strength
enjoy always what you have and what is yet to come
